My new iPad Mini!

I just  purchased an iPad mini.  I want to discover all that I can do with my new iPad.

I needed an iPad for a graduate class I am taking about using technology in the classroom.

Class begins on Tuesday so I hope  for a crash course in all things iPad. I thought 23 Things would be as good a place to start as any.

Thing 10: Sharing Photos

I had so much fun learning about sharing photos with PicsArt that I thought I would share some more for the Thing 10.

PicsArt is a highly rated, dependable app for the Kindle. I have created several projects and posted them to my Facebook page.

I see potential for this app to be useful in education and  library promotion.

There are options such as color splash, borders, backgrounds, cropping and many more options. I have worked several hours and I still feel like I am barely scratching the surface of the power of this app.

Thing 9 - Taking and Editing Photos

The Kindle Fire that I own does not take pictures, so this Mobile Thing was a little more difficult to find for my Kindle.

I downloaded Color Splash, but just like many of the users who left the bad ratings the app crashed every time I tried to open up a photo.

All I could do is try to color in the little apple. Turns out it isn't so easy.  Unless you have really little fingers or a stylus there is no way you would be able to get a nice clean border on your color. At least I couldn't on the apple. I don't think this app will be useful to me at all, personally or professionally.

Then, I installed PicsArt Photo Studio.

I was able to turn one of my favorite wedding photos into what looked like a pencil drawing. That was impressive.

Then, I connected my DropBox account to PicsArt. I was then able to access countless photos. I took some time to create a few collages. This would be useful for marketing or for creating family keepsakes. I also could upload the creations to Facebook.

This is a highly rated and functional app. I think this could be useful professionally and personally.

Thing 8 - Social Media Management tools

Today I downloaded FriendCaster for Facebook.
The reviews were not very good, so I didn't expect too much.

The first thing I liked was that I could change the color to green instead of blue!

I am not on Facebook very much, mostly because I don't want to take the time. But, I haven't seen an option to change color on the web version of Facebook.

I also like that when you tap the "friends" link, all your friends profile pictures show up in a grid. That format makes it easier to find my friends.

I watched a video and it seemed to work really well.

I think the simplicity and functionality will make FriendCaster useful to many KindleFire users.

Thing 7: Content Saving and Sharing

I have a Pinterest account and have used it somewhat for ideas for school and recipes and fun organizing ideas. My teen daughter uses it to find hairstyles and all kinds of things. She also advertises the shoulder bags that she creates.

I already had the Pinterest app on my Kindle, so I merely added some new boards.

I was interested to find boards and pins about libraries. I had not thought to even look for them before. We used to live in Owatonna, so I really enjoyed seeing the photos of the Owatonna Public Library.

I started a board called "Libraries" and pinned some photos to it.

I also liked the idea about eliminating boards that you really don't use so that Pinterest does not become so overwhelming. I cannot possibly do every project on Pinterest and I won't accomplish much of anything if I spend all day looking at all the cool things I could possibly do when I find the time.

Thing 6 - Creating and editing documents

I tried to download CloudOn, but for some reason it was not available for Kindle Fire.

I purchased OfficeSuite Professional 7 when I bought my Kindle. I was hoping to find time to figure out how to do it. So, I decided to do my review on OfficeSuite Pro7.

I found a YouTube on how it kind of works.

I created a sample document. I think this will work very well for my writing projects on the go. I also played with a sample spreadsheet. You can do all kinds of things with this program. You can work with formulas and graphs and charts. You can change colors and text. Really, it is an amazing piece of software

Also, I can open up any document that I have in dropbox. I can edit it and also print on the cloud.

I saw in some of my reading today that Kindle is compatible with a blue tooth keyboard. I think that until or unless I was able to have a keyboard, I probably would not do so much word processing on the go. I can just type so much faster and more accurately on the laptop.

Thing 5 - Notetaking

I downloaded Remember the Milk to my Kindle Fire.
I watched the videos about how to set up the program.
I even found the Remember the Milk blog for my Flipboard!

I entered a few tasks to see how it all works. You can email tasks to yourself and also set it up so that you receive text message reminders when your deadlines approach.

I am not sure whether this will be an app that I will use consistently or not. I am a list maker by nature. I can write out a list super fast. In fact, I have so many of my routines and things I have to do streamlined already, I do not really feel the need for an electronic to-do list.

However, I do think having a place to record thoughts and goals would be kind of fun. But in that case, I find all the tags and dates and all the things you have to figure out distracting.

As I keep up with the Remember the Milk blog on my Flipboard, maybe I will find more reasons to work consistently with this app.

Thing 4 - Keeping up

I downloaded Flipboard to my Kindle Fire. I also watched the YouTube video about how to set up my Flipboard.

It took me a while to figure it out, but I now have some interesting feeds coming into my Flipboard.

One is 10,000 Books Weblog: Minnesota Historical Society Press.

Another is All Recipes daily feed. I am not sure this will be especially helpful, since I already have the All Recipes app.

I like the Revive Our Hearts radio program by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, so I found the feed for that program.

I also found a newspaper for the college that my son attends in Wisconsin.

I think that as I work with Flipboard, I will find its features more useful.

I just found the Princeton Union Eagle, the newspaper in Princeton. That should be fun, since I write for them occasionally.

Thing 3 - utilities

A few weeks ago, I downloaded an app called GSam Battery Monitor.
This app monitors how much battery power is remaining on my Kindle Fire.
It also tells me which apps are using up all the power. They use a vacuum cleaner icon to show the apps sucking up the most juice. I think that is clever.

While I am charging my Kindle, this app shows how long it will take before I have a full charge. It also monitors how hot my battery is. I am not sure the significance of the temperature, but nonetheless, this app keeps track of that.

I found this to be a very useful app.

I tried to download the Google app, but I uninstalled it right away because I didn't like it. I already have the Gmail app and I like that and I didn't want to change how I view my emails on my Kindle.

Thing 2, again

I was working on these tips and found a great way to adjust my personal dictionary.

I also found out that my device is a Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, 2012.

23 Mobile Things begins today!

Hello 23 Mobile Things!
In trying to put together a blog post, I thought I would try to post a video from Christmas. My very talented son, Danny Boy, recited a book by John Rogan, called The Biggest Snowball Ever.

I thought I would try to add a movie clip of my 9 year old son performing on Christmas morning.

I have been looking forward to 23 Mobile Things since I first heard about the program at a CMLE meeting this fall.

I have set up blogs in the past - but I have no idea where they are now! I know I set up a WordPress account. I am pretty sure I had one on Blogger.com - but it is not there anymore. I used to follow some friends on some blog program or another.

My hopes are that I would be able to learn about blogging and be more consistent in posting. I also would like to learn how to link my blogs or at least find out where they are.

I have a Kindle Fire that I have enjoyed.  That is the Android device that I will be using for my 23 Mobile Things. I also have a KindleWhite that I love, love, love for reading. Unfortunately, that device does not support any apps. Actually, that is the point. The Kindle-White is designed to be an e reader. As such, there are minimal distractions.

Some of the Apps I enjoy on my Kindle Fire include:
Mind Games Pro
White Board
AccuWeather
Bible Gateway
BT Handwriting
Mini Piano Lite
Simply Yoga
Daily Workouts
You Need A Budget (YNAB)
Kindle Free Time
Ultimate Reading Comprehension
Suduko Free
Flashcard Machine
Office Suite Professional 7

Some that I have downloaded but have not really set up yet:
Out of Milk
Slice - Shopping Organized
Photo Editor - Fotolr
Pandora
Food Planner
Schedule Planner
House Cleaning List
Cozi Family Organizer
